There is a definite success/failure:
* For an ability test, the only difference is that you are rolling 1D20 instead of 1D100 under your ability (skill). * A simple contest is much like the old resistance chart, again except that you are using 1D20 instead of 1D100. * For an extended contest the final AP level indicates success or failure: positive means success, negative means failure.

The lack of damage (hit points) per se is less of a problem than it may seem. Consider that RQ never recorded factors such as morale or (in RQ1--2) fatigue. Nobody found that lack confusing. The HW AP mechanic represents those factors well.

Changing from RQ to HW does require a mental adjustment, especially from the Narrator (GM).
