An experienced magician can usually tell what sort of critter he's facing (as noted in Anaxial's Record). A player-hero might have to roll against whatever magic he's about ot use or mythology to see if its something he recognizes.

When you've been working with air critters for 20 years, you probably quickly figure out what differentitates each from the other. Probably something subtle -- as the difference between a bobcat and an alynx. Bobcats are, btw, sorcery based =)
