I have to agree with Bryan.

Ritual combat to honor Shargash sounds very proper to Alkoth. Not that sissy thing that heortlings do, fighting captured chaotics or enemies, but two brave volunteers honoring their god in a fight to the death.

Such displays will, no doubt, have been held to honor / impress the dignitaries of the Empire. Or at least the Emperor has been invited to observe this sacred ritual.

And when you show such things to the people leading a huge empire, they tend to get ideas...

(must be boring, empires, to warrant such extremes in entertainment)
