I'm reasonably sure that Sandy has said in the past that what the Yelmalian gets from completing the Hill of GOld successfully (ie loosing) is Immortality - That's what makes it worth risking. The trick isn't just loosing to Zorak Zoran, of course - Any fool can do that! The trick is loosing to ZZ, having your fire powers stripped away from you (I like RR's suggestion that first you have to "deiform" Yelmalio to get those fire powers) and still survive!
