That's what I like to see: Narrators who give their groups homework! Seriously, having some common referents can help both to make sure everyone has a grasp of the culture. And new players tend to be more comfortable being given a video or a fiction paperback to start than Thunder Rebels.
(Of course, in our Furthest organised crime campaign, Simon Bray and I had our players whack a nark, go and collect some vig and run some numbers but hey, that's another story!)
