I wasn't talking about Alexander. Alexander fought his battles a long way from Macedonia, with an army containing many types of troops besides the phalangites.

The Macedonian army, however, had been around for generations before Alexander, and under Philip it conquered the equally hilly Greece. This while its main component was pikemen.
