in a game i ran a while back the pcs travelled to the annual Swenstown festival as clan participants in such games. the various competions between the clans and tribes symbolised the conflicts of the area before the hero Swen brought Sartar to the tribes to talk of building walls and peace (ha!).
whilst the competitions continue - gradually getting bloodier and bloodier - heroquesters search for Sartar to restore peace to the tribes. until they do the city of Swenstown is hidden in mists, and cannot be found. it is said that should no heroquester succeed one year, the city will never be found again.
the results of the games and the heroquest largely determine appointments to the city ring and control of taxation for the year. individual competitions could be honouring specific gods, with the whole festival honouring Sartar, Swen and, of course, Orlanth.
if this tweaks interest a write-up is available at http://web.bham.ac.uk/gej865/campaign/1576.htm
