And stepping back, clan membership is magical! I believe that the clan tattoo is the magical connection to the clan wyter that allows the member to benefit from clan and wyter abilities and the wyter to get and channel ritual support.
Similarly, the other tattoos denote and channel religious connections, affinities etc.
