I Guess I'm not your "Average American" , nor are most of my college friends. We all studied either Archeology, Anthropology, or History , so we know that the Romans never made it to Ireland, just Brittannia (forgive my spelling)

We also would be more sympathetic to Irish heros rather than British because a) a lot of us have Irish heratige and we are more vocal and passionate about it and  B) A lot of us see the Pre-WW I British Empire much like the Red Goddess , or Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire, etc... I believe the phrase went "The Sun never sets on the British Empire" and that is because of their heavy handed way of dealing with neighboring countries and colonies.

Ask any Irishman in Cork or Dublin his opinion about Brtain and see what you get. Ask the same question to most Bostonians and you will probably get a similar answer.

There are more people that came from Ireland and Germany over here than true Tea-and-Crumpet British folk. Also we Irish-German Americans have carried on our traditions over here more so than most groups. I live in Amish Pennsylvania and I hear Gaelic and German spoken quite a bit around this area.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

          Cheers :)
