It is an experimental HW term for minor godlings, because of the considerable protest about the word daimone. Yes, it is taken from the Hindu word for "god" and from the ancient Persian word for "demon."
For information sake: the prehistoric branches of "Indo-european" of the [modern] Persian and Hindu used the same words for "god" and "antigod," but reversed their meanings.
