Forget the mythic reasons - throwing rugs, blankets, sheets, tapestries, cloaks, etc. over swords is a good way of stopping a sword fight. Swords are only sharp in films, and are easily tangled by large pieces of cloth. Getting them over in the first place is harder, but not overly so when you aren't the one the sword is trying to kill. There is also evidence that duelists used their cloaks to parry with, tangling the opponents blade, and allowing him to be disarmed or attacked without fear.

Cheers,
Graham
