It is so much easier to just impose your own pronounciation on it. Hence St. Louis, Missouri is pronounced "Saint Loo-is" not "Loo-ee" and Des Moines, Washington is pronounced "Dez Moines" not "Deh Moinz". And so on. And one of our local pubs, "the Reading Gaol" is pronounced "Reeding Gael" by the locals. It drives Diane (who grew up in the Thames valley between Reading and Oxford) nuts.
