And there is the pernicious influence of watered down Marxism on historical analysis. Trade had very very very little to do with the US declaration of war in 1812. Ideological contempt for Great Britain - and Great Britain's practice of kidnapping American soldiers to serve the British Navy (along with other offenses that jabbed at the pride of the young republic) - was at the root of the war (from the US perspective). Interestingly, the sections of the country that handled international trade (mainly New England) were extremely opposed to the war.
