Chris:
Gilmer is a pretty typical small east Texas town. Pictures here: http://www.visitgil <http://www.visitgilmer.com/pictures.php.> mer.com/pictures.php. They show its town square. Almost all country seats in Texas have a town square where the courthours is in the middle, surrounded by a small square where parking is strange, surrounded by a bunch of old store fronts. Typically, there will be a bank, a couple lawyers, perhaps a remaining hardware store, and the rest has (hopefully) gentrified into slightly shabby clothing stores, book shops, and small restaurants. (Otherwise they got boarded up when Wal-Mart arrived.)
Typically, the courthouses are gorgeous (unless they got rebuilt in the
50's), if their surroundings are often depressing. Here are two listings of
most of them. The first link is better presentation, but it fails an awful
lot; just hit refresh. The second link has a lot of detail and more pictures
for each courthouse. In particular, check out Hopkins county.
