I grow and shave off mine on a three- to six-month cycle. It tends to reach a point where I get fed up, and snip! Off it comes. And yep, the sink does get buggered.
There are some demagogic pogonoclasts in Champions of the Reaching Moon, wandering around Dragon Pass, forcibly shaving off beards.
