The idea of runes being a nexus of power, so central to Glorantha, is a direct lift from the pan-germanic Volkisch nationalist/occultist movement of the late nineteenth century. Sure the Vikings carved runes as spells, but the elaboration picked up for Glorantha are very recent in origin. Volkisch philosophical and occult ideas were picked up by two movements... National Socialism, and the new age movement.
