Yeah, but you would have a hard job selling a line of fiction based on the exploits of said 'wanton slayers'. Such things are interesting as a curiosity and as an aside, but don't work for hero's 'most' western people enjoy reading about.

I am reading the Sharpe books at the moment. Cornwell embellishes the worst excesses of the soldiers and doesn't make excuses (rape, murder, casual torture), but that is not how Sharpe behaves, although he does kill folk (a lot).
