Yeah, some parts of the Old Testament really, really SUCK.
The translation you're quoting isn't fantastic, but that's just
academic...
Much of the OT is just tedious repetition of the theme that if God is
with you, you will kill all your enemies and take all their wives,
children, and livestock, and make loads of cash as part of the
bargain (pure Conan the Barbarian) ; but if you stop listening to the
current Prophet, they will do this to you instead.
Main reason that the Jews of the time hated Jesus was because he was
going around telling everyone that this was bollocks.
