Supporting Rituals

When the clan offers to support someone elses ritual, either the "support a ritual of their choice" to end a feud, or supporting a heroquest in events, how much magic you lose seems to be related to how many worshippers you send.

I'm a bit confused or frustrated though, as the cost to us seems very variable. If you send most of your tribe to support a ritual you lose all of your current magic, and it doesn't matter if your current magic is 30+ On the other hand, if you send a lesser portion, you don't get credit for the same generosity. I mean, in the early game if I want to settle a feud it seems wisest to send an emissary when your magic isn't too strong? Or can others tell how strong your magic is, and compensate accordingly? i.e. if your magic is 12 and you offer to send half the clan it is considered similar to having a magic of 6 and sending almost all of the clan????
