Issaries' Quest

I'm just curious on the issaries quest. The very last loop just when you think you are safe, the long tooths pounce on you, defying tradition.

Is there a right way to get past this or am I screwing up the heroquest somehow and am calling this upon myself for no reason?

The best I've done so far is come back mauled.
