I used to spend magic on all three attempts, till I read somewhere by David that it was needless sacrifice. So.. nowadays I always give tears twice and only use magic for the final aid, so as not to waste too much magic. It works well, at least to convince myself that it might be the best solution till David says otherwise. Truest to the myth?
