I can only reiterate the arguments that have already been put forward. Opening the source *might* extend the life of the game and expand its playerbase if someone took the time to make it work... but nobody is going to commit to something like that because without seeing what they have to work with, the size of the task is hard to gauge.

It comes down to whether this possibility is worth the effort required to release it. Given your conclusion, I guess it isn't, but I hope its something you'll reconsider in the future.
