What I'm likely to be creating for my own future use at some point is a critical hit table for the individual body parts. My next capaign probably will not stress the hit locations as much (UNLESS there's a critical hit to a location). Instead of severing the limb each time, I'm thinking of specific types of limb damage (arm hits affecting DEX or STR, leg hits DEX or movement rate, head hits affecting INT, perception skills, etc.). *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 19:10:42 -0400 From: Tal Meta Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Next..how about dodging, training, etc. Thomas Cooper wrote: > > MAN it is so great to be reading all the posts & be able to work them into > my game. Cult in the World Kelanen's faith extends to nearly every part of the known lands, except perhaps among some of the northern barbarians and the savages of the Ameido & Hepmonoland jungles. HEWARD Runes: Harmony Heward is Lord of Composition, revered by troubadors, bards, and other musicians across the Flanaess. He is also revered by those who construct musical instruments. Cult in the World Heward's cult is small, and shrines to this Hero cult are often as not located within larger temples dedicated to Lirr, Lydia, or Olidammara. Whereas Olidammara is the Rogue, Lydia the Sage, and Lirr the Lyricist, Heward is the musician, the one who "writes the songs", wringing the musical notes from a wide variety of musical instruments (and creating new ones at a steady pace). Followers of Heward seek to emulate their god, and in doing so they fill the world with music. Lay Membership Requirements: Lay members of this cult are taught a wide variety of skills, including Dodge, Jump, Sing, Music Lore, World Lore, Play Intrument (type), Sneak, and Ceremony. A logical extension of this rule would be that a Sorceror who exceeds his Presence can still cast spells, but they will only last for 10 minutes. This avoids the rather embarassing situation whereby a peasant with a spell matrix and a large reserve of magic points can cast more, and bigger, spells than a magus with the same equipment. Sandy Sez: I have instituted the following rule: "A commoner can only have one (1) spell in effect at a time. He can drop his spell at any time, if he wishes to cast a second spell. In any case, his spells cannot last longer than ten minutes. If a sorcerer has more total levels in effect than his Presence, he cannot cast any spells, until enough of his spells have been dropped to reduce the total levels below his Presence." philip.hibbs@tnt.co.uk or phibbs@compuserve.com http://members.tripod.com/~PhilHibbs/ A single death is a tragedy a million deaths are a statistic Josef Stalin *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 19:27:45 -0400 From: "James Bickmeyer" Subject: [RQ-RULES] Just for the Experince I can't remember who, but someone said they have experienced their players changing weapons just to get the checks. I too have experienced the problem of players switching weapons in the middle of combat, to just get that check mark. I asked them not to rules lawyer and to role play. Two players continued to switch weapons and parries when they got their check marks. This became an irritation to me. Especially when the best role players were sticking to the spirit of role playing. My solution for these guys was to increase the skill of the opponents they faced. So every opponent they fought was 20-40% better than they were when going against any other PC. The NPC skill would then drop when they had to fight the other PCs. Mean and petty? Yes it was. But they gave me a new pet peeve. I have come up with two ways to deal with this problem. I let my players that things will get real tough if they do this kind of rules lawyering. It being a pet peeve and all. I now reward them in a slight way for continuing to use their the same weapons in a fight. For each special success their chance to increase that skill is 1/2% better. For each critical their chance to increase that skill is 1% better. We have used this for almost two years and it works well. I have been considering giving a 1% increase to the chance to increase the skill on each fumbles. A successful roll must still be made to get a skill increase check, but the fumble 1% can be accumulated with prior to successful skill rolls. After all, I learn from my mistakes. The really bad one, I try hard not to repeat. TRITHEREON Runes: Chaos, Movement, Truth Known as "The Summoner", Trithereon is the god of Liberty, Individuality, Self-Protection, and Retribution. Cult in the World Followers of Trithereon are sworn to defend the ideals of liberty, thwarting the plans of slavers, press gangs, and fanatics of all types. Even governments are not immune to the scrutiny of Trithereon's followers, if such governments are oppressive to the people they rule. Because of this, Trithereon's followers are always on the move, seeking new wrongs to right, and new causes to champion. Lay Membership Requirements: Lay members of this cult are known as the Investigators, and it is their function to provide the cult with information concerning activites or regimes that might require the attention of an Avenger. Skills taught at this level include: Fast Talk, Orate, Human Lore, World Lore, Listen, Ceremony, 1H Spear attack/parry, and 1H Sword attack/parry. Initiate Membership Requirements: Standard. Training in Summon becomes available to Initiates, who are known as Avengers. It is their responsibility to follow up the leads provided them by the Investigators, and if they find an injustice, to work to eradicate it. Initiates are generally tasked with avenging acts like slavery and its ilk, leaving the more wide-sweeping governmental problems to the Grand Avengers. Spirit Magic: Bladesharp, Control (Dogs, Falcons, Sea Lizards), Countermagic, Farsee, Fanaticism, Heal, Second Sight. Acolyte Membership Requirements: as per Priests. Acolytes are known as the Grand Avengers, and are assigned tasks deemed too dangerous for Initiates to handle. Priesthood Requirements: Standard. Trithereon's priesthood coordinates the activites of the Investigators and Avengers, occasionally taking on the roles of Grand Avengers if the need is great enough. Virtues for Trithereon include: Altruistic, Energetic, Honorable, Rebellious, and Vengeful. Common Divine Magic: all Special Divine Magic: Create Gate, Detect Truth, Fear, Retrieve Weapon, Sureshot, Truespeak Associated Gods Kelanen: provides Truesword Obad-Hai: provides Command Gnome *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 00:19:31 -0400 From: Tal Meta Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Just for the Experince James Bickmeyer wrote: > > I can't remember who, but someone said they have experienced their players > changing weapons just to get the checks. > > I too have experienced the problem of players switching weapons in the > middle > of combat, to just get that check mark. That coudl well have been me. It no longer happens, just the once or twice. I don't mind players swapping weapons in between combat as long as it's not noticeable and no-one really minds. One of my characters develops a wide range of fighting styles, but would keep to the same one in a combat. > I too have experienced the problem of players switching weapons in the > middle > of combat, to just get that check mark. At higher levels, when you have just cast Bladesharp 20, and swap to fighting the Demon of the Nether Pits with your unenchanted Dagger just for the tick you might think the better of it...
