We were discussing the survivability of HW in the face of a WoC-funded renaissance in AD&D. His comment was pragmatic, and hearteningly so: He stated that he didn't mind letting WoC pay to rejuvenate the market (suffering now frmo the card and computer games) and have HW once again take a 2nd seat to D&D. He also said that, as before, "we'll get the intelligent ones"... Interesting. I guess I would agree. - -Steve (styopa@iname.com) or at work (Steve@necadon.com) http://surf.to/styopa *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 09:43:09 +0100 From: "Hibbs, Philip" Subject: [RQ-RULES] BFRP I had an idea for a more fun way of laying out the magic section the other day, by dividing spells up into categories based on the kind of spell, so you would get Storm Magic, Earth Magic, Death, Water, Lunar, Fire, Weapon, War, etc., and cults would have access to a number of powers. I know, this sounds a bit like The Other Game(TM), but there's nothing inherently wrong with that. philip.hibbs@tnt.co.uk http://members.tripod.com/~PhilHibbs/ Any view of things that is not strange is false - Neil Gaiman, Sandman *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 10:38:31 +0100 From: "Paul Bestwick" Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] BFRP Philip wrote: Subject: [RQ-RULES] BFRP >I had an idea for a more fun way of laying out the magic section the other >day, by dividing spells up into categories based on the kind of spell, so >you would get Storm Magic, Earth Magic, Death, Water, Lunar, Fire, Weapon, >War, etc., and cults would have access to a number of powers. War-like cults with no elemental ties would just get Bladesharp. Rather than fitting spells into more than one category, I'd prefer to see more spells, the more the better. After all, practically every village, if not every family or even individual, is going to have peculiarities and differences in their magic. So rather than having Speedart under both Weapon and Air or Storm or Sky, I'd put it as writ under Weapon, and have a variant for Sky, and a different one for Storm (ZephyrStone?). Should we use the old RQ spell names, or make up new ones? I think their should be 8 categories, based on the ancient idea of 4 basic elements of Air, Water, Earth and Fire, plus 4 sub categories of our own Light (Fire + Air), Storm (Air + Water), Dark (Water + Earth), however I am stuck for a suitable name for Earth + Fire. I suppose their is Life, but I prefer that to be a combination of all 4 primary elements. If I remember correctly, my House Rules (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Lair/7556/house.htm) currently have my simplistic version of fatigue rules that seem to work in my game. Any time I try and use other types of fatigue rules the group (including myself) end up forgetting about them, as they only hinder play, and we revert back to basically ignoring fatigue. I don't like the idea of electric or lightning as a category, in an ancient world the only manifestation of electricity was as lightning in a storm therefore it should be part of the storm category. If we try to keep the number of categories down we keep up the differences between them and they aren't all similar. OK, how many would you say? I don't think 12 is too many: Fire / Sky Water / Sea Earth / Land Wind / Storm Darkness / Underground Moon / Madness Battle / War Fertility / Crops Life / Healing Death / Combat Spirit / Otherworld Community / Wealth Any others, or any problems with the above groupings? Death / Combat and Battle / War could be merged into Death / Battle, but I like the idea of 12 categories, or maybe 13, they are significant numbers. philip.hibbs@tnt.co.uk http://members.tripod.com/~PhilHibbs/ Any view of things that is not strange is false - Neil Gaiman, Sandman *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 15:44:36 +0100 From: "Paul Bestwick" Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] BFRP >Any others, or any problems with the above groupings?
