Give the troll and human a 60% base. The troll, with his superior size and strength, gets a 12% modifier, for example. While the human only gets an 8% modifier. The modified skills are 72% for the troll and 68% for the human, but both have exactly the same chance of going up after an experience check. Me: Perhaps the category modifiers should be figured from species average and not from 10. But this will complicate things significantly. An alternate track would be to work out a learning bonus that applied to all skill increase rolls. What about average on INT and POW rounded down? "I > think I'll play a character who is a long distance runner, famed for his > ability to chase down game during the hunt. Oh, I haven't got any stats > over 11, well I suppose that goes on CON." If you start out with that much of the character pre-conceived, then you shouldn't be looking at randomly generated stats. The way I see it, random generation is for RANDOM characters. If you want to be able to build a character from concept to stats, rather than stats to concept, then you should use a point distribution system. This means there should be two stat determination systems at t minimum. RQ3 has three systems: random, point distribution, and a combination of the two. I don't see a problem with that. Now then , the discussion should be "what is a fair range for RANDOM generation of attributes?" I personally use a 4d6 drop the lowest method, with the option to raise any ability up to the minimum average for that character's race. YCMV. I thought about doing this once, and discarded it as too much work. As a consequence, I asked Tal if he would post them on his web site, and he graciously accepted. They are at http://members.xoom.com/talmeta/rq.html, In Word 6.0, Adobe Acrobat, and ASCII formats (the ASCII is kinda choppy, as there was a lot of tables and column formatting in the original. When I get a chance, I will reformat it and send another copy to Tal). This is actually a complete magic rules set that I use for PenDragon Pass. When I started to pull it out, I decided that it all fit together too well to easily pull apart, so the quick answer was to send it all. Also, I owe credit to a few sources. The actual shamanism rules grew from a private discussion I had a while back with Sandy Peterson, and thus bear some similarity to the latest version of his rules I have seen. Also, the divine and spirit (or petty) spell descriptions were cribbed quite liberally from David Dunham's PDP rules, changed somewhat to my taste. I will try. when I get time, to convert at least the shamanism rules to BRP, and send those to Tal as well, if he doesn't mind. - ---- Boris *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@mpgn.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 16:59:35 EDT From: KESmith502@aol.com Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Criticals and magic: spirit enchantments In a message dated 10/19/98 5:23:42 AM Eastern Daylight Time, simonh@msi- uk.com writes: << If you mean create, then no.
