The concept of speciality is good (tm), however it strikes me that it is definitely limiting at the higher levels. Perhaps this is as it should be since, I notice, even Gunda is limited to skill/20 in non-specialty spells. What do people think of Magus' not being restricted to skill/20 in non-speciality spells, but dropping to skill/10 while keeping skill/5 in specialty area? I must admit, I'm thinking it *isn't* a good idea but I'd appreciate opinions... Appart from multiple attacks (always a good surprise against an opponent engaged agains an ally to your right - wasn't expecting that one, no parry or dodge!) the big advantages that spring to mind are still being at 100%+ if attacking opponents with shimmer up, knackered from fatigue loss, or when knocked down, attacking from below or otherwise disadvantaged. A very good chance of hitting with an aimed blow is also be useful. My usual group still use the older RQ2 slash/crush specials, where this extra 10% chance of a special would be fairly significant. I'm pretty sure there are examples where ceremony is used to increase the number of points that can be cast. As for specialists at high levels, I'm not too sure - but I wouldn't do away with the /20 entirely, maybe there could be an incremental process - /19, /18, etc. Opinions expressed may not even be my own, let alone those of any organisations, nations, species, or schools of thought to which I may be affiliated. http://www.snark.freeserve.co.uk/ Failure is not an option, it's integral to the o/s. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 12:04:45 -0400 From: Tal Meta Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Sandy's sorcery - using ceremony Q. You can use ceremony equal to your skill in the spell, or your skill in ceremony, whichever is less. Each point of ceremony increases the time required to cast the spell (in minutes or hours), and allows you to perform one extra Art level with the spell (so in the above example, you could cast Boost Agility 12, though your casting chance would still only be 60%). - -- talmeta@cybercomm.net - Heretic & Dilettante ICQ - 12594453 AIM - talmeta (note change!) Cult in the World Known as the Dark Serpent of Pain, he is the son of Breeka, and father to all the other evil spirits of the pantheon. Consumed by hatred for his bretheren, he constantly seeks to harm them and their followers, and to destroy their works. Meyanok's High Holy Day falls on the 4th of Fire, the darkest night of the year, with additional services held whenever Konola is in her new phase. Meyanok's followers seldom construct permenent temples, usually depending on temporary shrines or small temples ereccted in the ruins of the temples of other gods. Priests of Meyanok seldom don their full dress except on holy nights, but such consists primarily of a snakeskin cloak and headdress, and often a tight-fitting bodysuit made of snakeskin, as well. Lay Membership Requirements: Meyanok is worshipped by those who seek power over others, and by those who feel slighted by the world around them. He also garners quite a bit of worship from those who seek to stave off his attentions. No skills are taught to lay members of this cult. Initiate Membership Requirements: Standard. Known as Ebon Serpents, initiates of this cult actively promote Meyanok's cause in the world, helping seduce the followers of other cults to join their own. When words will not suffice, most will not hesitate to resort to violence or mayhem, preferably through hired proxies. Skills taught to initiates include Climb, Dodge, Fast Talk, Speak Languages, Lores (Animal , Human, Plant, Poison, Touv, World), Conceal, Devise, Listen, Scan, Track, Hide, Ceremony, and Masaq attack. Priesthood/Shamans Requirements: Standard for shamans. Known as Nightfangs, Meyanok's shamans are greatly feared throughout Hepmonaland, for they are the cause of much suffering. Could have been a problem to one or two, but the snakes go down with one good hit. I rolled the encounters and the players met the friendly snakes first and avoided the issue. Big "12 Armour points in my underpants and any blow is going to squash you" Club the Giant. Tough fight, but he couldn't stand up either. He one-punched about three people to the edge of bleeding to death and the heal spells kept them alive. The Agimori with the 2h-sword and the Bab. Gor with the 2h-axe and some extensions on her divine magic waded in. 12 AP doesn't last long against 3d+ attacks plus Bladesharp 5 (17-25 damage). Then there are those God awful clawed hands... ~shudder~ Just let them catch someone with good armor and chop the fingers off. ;>) The Agimori w/2h-swd hurt them bad, drove the hands away, and Fireblades killed the gorps afterward. The key was that teamwork lessened the enemy's ability to be affective. You can break the ceremony you use up as you like: eg. boost agility 50%, ceremony 40%. This could make a boost agility 80% that could use 6 art levels. I've got a number of illusion sorcery questions I need answered/talked about. Given this seems to be the only forum, I'll post them below. Also, I've got some new illusion sorcery spells for Sandy's sorcery if anyone want's a look: http://www.dstc.edu.au/RDU/staff/rm/my_illusion.html Cheers Robert Questions - --------- 1. Can you create an illusion of light? For example, if I use phantom vision to create a light source, does it actually glow like a light? I think it must be able to. 2. Like 1., can phantom touch give off heat? ie. if I have a phantom of a fire, can I get it to give off heat and become hotter the closer to the 'fire' you get? 3. Can phantom force actually lift things? ie. can you make a flying carpet with it to lift you? If it can, you could make a phantom ladder, with no vision so only you know where it is, and climb up it since it could support your weight! 4. Can you have more than one spell held at the same time? The latest rules I have (and Craig's site isn't answering to see if there are any more recent ones) *suggest* you can. 5. I want to have an illusion covering me that moves with me. I want the mouth to move and look like I am talking, and the clothes to move about etc. I believe that the illusion art can do this so if I cast phantom sight intensity 4, illusion 4 I could cover a SIZ 12 being with any illusion I want (eg. an old man in rags) and the illusion would pretend to speak when the recipient did, would move when the recipient moved and would react just like the clothes and body of the real recipient. Except, of course, it would make no sound or feel correct. So if the recipient was wearing a sword then the sound of the sword striking something could give the game away, unless the recipient comes up with a good explanation or the caster puts something metallic into the illusion. Note that phantom touch would make this a *very* *very* good disguise :-) - though it would cost 10MP for the multispell et. al. *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ End of RuneQuest Rules Digest V2 #102 ************************************* *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message.
