RULES OF THE ROAD 1. Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. 4. No anonymous posting, please. Don't say something unless you're ready to stand by it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 13:49:42 PST From: "Leon Kirshtein" Subject: [RQ-RULES] GM fun The rules have been quite lately. So I have taken upon myself to post something, anything ... As a primer for our next get together our GM has sent us this litle tidbit. As a side note the party currently consists of 6 BB acolytes and 1 initiate. Some characters are also initiates of other cults. Greetings from Saphonisba, Tender of the Garden of the World that is Arstola, Beloved of Flamal, Daughter of Aldrya: We have reached a decision on the matter of the strangers. They will be allowed to live. Although they are crude, mannerless and, shall we say, strong-smelling, we believe that they have much to offer. Morigani Dhu, She who holds the Axes of Babeesta Gor for our Great Forest, says that they are indeed warriors of great potential; she proposes a test of their worth and loyalty. She shall open a heroquest path for them; if they are weak, then they will die and be fertilizer. If they are spies of the Accursed Red Moon, Burner of Rist, then they will die, and be fertilizer, and their spirits will serve us forever. But if they are strong and True followers of the Avenger, they can be both axe and shield for our people. We will give them their chance, but give them nothing else until they have returned from the quest in triumph. As to the matter of the dwarf, let her live, too. Even though she is the first dwarf to be allowed into our woodland home since the fall of Jrustela, we believe that she too has her place with these followers of the Axe Maiden. If she is indeed the one whose coming has been foretold, the one whom the prophecies call "She Who Breaks Mostal's Stuff", then she will be a treasure above price. And if not, we can always kill her later, if she fails. We have decided to place a member of our own peoples amongst these foreigners; a suitable candidate has been released from death row, and is being instructed as we speak. The Annoying One is the perfect choice for this: dangerous and completely expendable. It shall be she who is the one who watches and listens to everything these outlanders do, and who knows, she might even be able to persuade them to take up the quaint Arstolan custom of .... shaving. And if our agent fails, the outlanders will kill her for us; and then we will choose another in her place. Remember, our Forest must be preserved, root, branch, leaf and nut, regardless of the cost. These Words are Law. The Daughter of Aldrya has spoken. P.S. K..., your character will be a warrior elf who is an outcast amongst her own peoples. Your character will have the Craft skill of Critique, with subskills in Verbal, Written and non-Verbal. Successful use of this skill will reduce the Communication skill of the victim, a Critical will permanently reduce the opponent's Charisma by one point. Now you know why your character was on death row. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 22:26:08 PST From: "Leon Kirshtein" Subject: [RQ-RULES] Cult of Boreeal I have made an addition to my website. Another pair of spells, inspired by similar spells from CoC... JAMETHIEL'S CRYSTAL WORLD* Self, Maintained Exotic This spell is ideally cast with an Intensity equal to the SIZ of the caster, but may be cast with a minimum Intensity of the caster's SIZ/2. Once successfully cast, the caster is surrounded by a glassy sphere with a diameter appropriate to the Intensity of the spell (i.e. if the Intensity equals the SIZ of the caster, he may stand upright, SIZ/2 reduces him to a fetal position). Inside the sphere he is completely isolated from the vagarities of the external climate, protected from extremes of temperature, pressure, and toxins in the atmosphere. It is commonly multispelled with Skin of Life, so that he may continue to breathe in the sphere for long periods. If the caster elects to remain within the sphere, his only means of locomotion is rolling the globe from within or being pushed/carried by outsiders. The Crystal World automatically has AP equal to half the Intensity used to create it, but is sometimes Multispelled with Boost Armor if rough handling or sudden shocks or blows are expected. JAMETHIEL'S X* Attack, Ranged, Maintained Exotic Each Intensity of this spell may be used to affect 3 SIZ of a target, though additional Intensity adds strength to the manifestation of the spell. If the target fails to resist, he is immobilized by a shimmering rose-colored force that holds him in an upright spread-eagle position until he is either released by the caster or can overcome the Intensity (x3) of the spell with his STR on the resistance table (one such check may be made each round). [Example: Hodusk the Great (STR & SIZ 18) is overcome by an Intensity 8 Jamethiel's X. Each round thereafter he may pit his STR vs the Intensity of the spell x3 (24) to break free from his bondage]. - -- talmeta@cybercomm.net - Heretic, Dilettante, & God-Machine ICQ - 12594453 AIM - talmeta Homepage - *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.imagiconline.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 13:39:17 -0500 From: Tal Meta Subject: [RQ-RULES] DMD - Maglubiyet for RQ/Greyhawk the Goblin Gods MAGLUBIYET Runes: Law (Malign), Earth (Malign), Death, Fire Known variously as the Bloody Axe, the Worg-Tamer and the Flame-Eyed, Maglubiyet is the patron/creator of all the jebli-kin races as well as the deity overseeing war and rulership. Cult in the World Maglubiyet urges his followers to make war on the surface races not necessarily for territory, but for the sheer joy of bloodletting. Most jebli-kin are happier below ground, so the only battles for territory they fight are with those races that they compete with most closely, namely the noniz and the dwur. Though similar in nature and outlook, the jebli-kin strive against the euroz as well, as the euroz will dwell below ground when they can as well. Jebli myth is full of the titanic conflict waged by the spirits of jebli-kin and euroz in the afterworld; this does little to endear either race to the other in this world. Maglubityet's High Holy Day is the 17th of Fireseek, with lesser holidays at each solstice and equinox, as well as regular services on the 17th of each month. Shrines to Maglubiyet are typically highly portable, involving a great Axe upon which is poured the blood of both sacrifices and the faithful. Shamans of Maglubiyet can be recognized by red tinge of their eyes and the cloaks of wolf-hide they wrap themselves in. Lay Membership Requirements: All male jebi are considered lay members of Maglunbiyet's cult at birth, and most will attend ceremonies honoring him throughout their lives. Skills taught include Dodge, Maneuver, Ride, Orate, Speak Languages, Crafts (mining, weaponsmithing, etc.), First Aid, Lores (all jebli-kin, mineral, spirit, world), Conceal, Listen, Scan, Smell, Track, Ambush, Hide, Sneak, Ceremony and Axe attack/parry. Initiate Membership Requirements: Standard. Most jebli who choose to initiate in Maglubiyet's cult seek to become warriors first, with an eye towards commanding other warriors and possibly the tribe someday. Spirit Magic: Most spirit magic is available from the Shaman/Priests of this cult. Shaman/Priesthood Requirements: Standard. While not all tribal chieftains are shamans of Maglubiyet, those who are not are generally wise enough to give these War-Shamans a high ranking position among their counselors. Virtues for Maglubiyet's shamans include Angry, Destructive, Proud, Prudent, and Warlike. Common Divine Magic: Call Followers, Command Cult Spirit, Divination, Enchant Holy Symbol, Excommunication, Group Casting, Initiate, Sanctify, Spellteaching, Warding, Worship. Special Divine Magic: Axe Slash, Command Worgs, Maglubiyet's Fury, Strike, Weaponmight. Shamanic Taboos Runic Affinities Only. I'm in the process of aquireing as many RQ published references as possible and have started picking up magzines with RQ articles. What is the best issue of a magazine for RQ content that you have come across? Since I asked the question, I'll give my answer now. Judges Guild Dungoneer #14. It has three cults, the outline for a fourth, a new race, and a senerio. Yes, they are both 1pt Divine spells and they are cast on an opponent, but there the similarities end. Fear is a spell associated with darkness and destruction and is similar to an attack by a shade. Your opponent will ignore it, be demoralized, go unconscious, or die. Madness affects the mind and is tied to the moon and other cults, which mess around with insanity. The effect is similar to an attack of Lune. Your opponent will either ignore it, be befuddled (normal and critical), or go Fanatic (and not be able to tell friend from foe) on a special. Madness tends to be usually more effective since you take out an opponent on a simple success, but could be very dangerous if you special an opponent in front of you. Fear is a no loss proposition, but then you really need it there is good chance it may be not enough. Overall I feel these two are fairly well balanced within the system and compare well against each other.
