There are other ways to "do" opposed skills. One that I believe I saw in an old White Dwarf magazine worked like this: Suppose you want to hide from me, and I've got Scan 50% to your Hide 60%. Firstly, you try to make your Hide roll. If you fail, then the difficulty of my Scan is 0; otherwise, the difficulty of the Scan is equal to your Hide skill (or 60, in this case). I then adjust my Scan skill by the difference between my skill and the difficulty level. Thus, if you failed, I roll against a Scan of 50 + (50 - 0) or 100%; if you succeeded, I roll against a Scan of 50 + (50 - 60) or 40%. The beauty of this system is that you can add in difficulty modifiers. For example, let's say that you're painted completely black, and it's night. Good enough for a +30 difficulty modifier, even if you fail (so I'm rolling against a Scan of 50 + (50 - 30) [70%] if you fail and 50 + (50 - 90) [10%] if you succeed). You can also arbitrarily assign difficulties for such things as sheer cliffs. You might decide that climbing that cliff is difficulty 70. That means NoHopeInHell (Climb 40%) has only a 40 + (40 - 70) or 10% chance of success, while ClimbsLikeTheWind (Climb 90%) will only fail on a 96-100. The problem? A few more calculations, and also how do we decide if you deserve an experience check? Anyone else got any neat ideas for opposed skill resolution? - -- GAZZA "To know others is wisdom.
