Do not include large sections of a message in your reply. Especially not to add "Yeah, I agree" or "No, I disagree." Or be excoriated. If someone writes something good and you want to say "good show" please do. But don't include the whole message you praise. 2. Use an appropriate Subject line. 3. Learn the art of paraphrasing: Don't just quote and comment on a point-by-point basis. 4. No anonymous posting, please. Don't say something unless you're ready to stand by it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 01 Sep 2000 14:17:00 -0400 From: trentfs@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Re: [RQ-RULES] RQ: new versions, old versions, conversions sperrin@aol.com wrote: > Incident One: Greg Stafford allowed each of his playtesters and contributors >for White Bear and Red Moon to either have a city named after him or to name >a city. Greg already had the concept of the Trolls as a cursed race, but he didn't know what the curse was. We (the authors) figured we needed a goblinoid race that starting PCs could start out against that could be fought fairly easily. So far, everything we had come up with (including dark trolls, cave trolls, and war trolls) was pretty devastating. So I took the idea of needing some goblinoids and the curse of the trolls and came up with trollkin. Greg then added all the mythic backstory. Pretty straight forward, actually. However, is playing a "duck" (durulz) >qualitatively sillier than playing a "goat" (satyr), "horse" (centaur), >"bull" (minotaur), or "fish" (mermaid)? You're right of course, and I don't think it's sillier. But I only wanted to express MY dislike for it. For one think: I never played something like the above races. Weirdest things I have played were demons (in Ars Magica and Angeli) and some humanoid alien races in SF-Systems (even a psi-cat ;-) ). But if you like it: go on and have fun. That's exactly the approach I wanted to take with the BFRP project - a simple modular BFRP based core rules set, with a complete set of basic rules for everything, with more detailed optional replacement rules sections. I also like the way Elric uses 'spot rules' for a lot of situations and tactics. BTW, has anyone else noticed the way 3E uses a shrunk version of the character sheet, with descriptive text arrowed to sections of the character sheet to explain it's layout and how everything relates together? CoC and Elric have been using this method to explain character generation for years. Solution: publish the rules in >some format online. There was an effort to produce a BRP (chaosium house system) based fantasy RPG that would function as an RQ-Lite. However this died when Chaosium announced their intention to re-print Elric. I've been using Elric as the core rules set for my Gloranthan games for about 6 years now, using the RQ3 magic system bolted on, and it's worked very well. With Elric in print, I realy don't see the need for an RQ-Lite. I also doubt Chaosium would appreciate direct competition that is basicaly ripped off from their own games.
