As I recall, you could receive some sort of gain roll (can't recall if it was experience, training, or research) in Ride for doing a certain amout of riding. Possibly the same thing applied to language use, I can't remember. I have to say that this always struck me as an odd thing about RQ. It's perfectly possible to learn lots of things while not specifically training them or using them in crisis situations. And what's more, lots of activities (and even more in a primitive culture) are in some way cross-training. For example, harvesting a grain crop might simultaneously increase STR, CON, Plant Lore...and if you whistle while you work, your Whistle skill. :o Look, I've been climbing 16 flights of stairs for 10 minutes a day for only a few weeks and my wind has already improved hugely! I used to pant like a fiend for minutes after I got to my office, but now I'm fine in 30 seconds. Plus my legs are definitely stronger. Maybe this would require too much bookkeeping for most GMs, but as an optional set of rules, maybe? ->Peter - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Maranci peter@maranci.net Woonsocket, RI The New Pete's RuneQuest & Roleplaying!: http://www.maranci.net/rq.htm *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 23:08:04 -0700 From: "Trent Smith" Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Skill training Terry Tollisen wrote: > Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 1 pt increase for research? > I don't have the rules handy, but I believe training gives 2 points > actumatic increase (or a dice roll). This was corrected in the Official RQ3 Errata. And it makes more sense, too -- the 1D6-2 dice roll averages 1.5, an auto increase of 2 would make playing it safe a better option than taking the risk, which just ain't right. I think we allways played 1d6-1, or get 2 automatic. For those who does use this, here's the formula to do it: S=starting skill D=Destination skill H=Hours to spend ((D+S-2)*(D-S))\4=H If anyone wants an Excel sheet with this (or similar) formula as a table I can send it to you. The problem is of course that it is 100 rows by a 100 collums. The width makes it a bit difficult to handle (I've never printed it by the way). - -Terje Tollisen ______________________________________________ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup *************************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list send mail to majordomo@lists.ient.com with the line 'unsubscribe runequest-rules' as the body of the message. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 18:31:45 +0300 (EEST) From: Olli Kantola Subject: Re: [RQ-RULES] Skill training On Thu, 26 Oct 2000, Jim & Peta Lawrie wrote: > Training hours breakdown : > > 50% Broadsword Attack > 10% Broadsword/Shield Parry > 10% Dodge > 10% Strength training > 10% Constitution training > 10% Dexterity training I'd multiply each percentage by 1,5, or something like that. This can be any trainable stat or POW. Also remember they get a POW check if they attend high holy day worship. If they miss high holy day, they can go apostate. Atleast in Sandy's sorcery rules this seems to be so. (A player of mine got frustrated by that rule. AND eventually figured that all offencive magics should be indirect. Flying damage boosted daggers anyone? ;) What about spirit magic? Divine magic? And if it indeed is so, then how to rationalize that Lightnings don't work agains some persons?
