Well, about 2 months back, I was trying to navigate through Avalon Hill's
worthless on-again-off-again page, and ran across listings of most of the RQ3
stuff still apparently for sale. I couldn't tell you if its still there
though.

Pretty good huh. >Criticals: Slashing and crushing do full damage, and that's it. Or is there >some special effect, like some 2nd edition extra rules suggested (double >damage for slashes, max damage modifier plus rolled dm for crushes) ? Basic RQ3 is full damage for critical of all attacks. I think it is implied that a critical Impale is double weapon damage ignore all armor. My house rules state that all crits to full weapon damage, ignore mundane armor. Impaling weapons do NOT gain impale on a crit. So in effect it 5% to crit and 15% to special. As an additional note, I use alternate rules for specials. Impale, double weapon damage to head and torso Slash, full weapon damage to head and limbs crush, full strength damage to all locations. >Question about Sandy's sorcery rules: >Evoke(energy) is not classified as an attack spell(instant, ranged). IMO this would balance this otherwise quite heavy >spell nicely (for 10 mp:s you get damage from 1 to 10, and if target resists >then nothing happens...) I also had asked this question. Sandy's reply was that the Evoke [Energy] did NOT have targeting roll as well. I believe he considered the spell casting skill roll as part of the ability to hit the target. The problem with that is, what if it is the Held spell. Someone, at the time, suggested a sorcerer making a throw roll. I didn't go with that route. I figured the use of presence, and MP expended made it difficult enough. As a gaming example, we had a Sorcerer on Griffin Island using Sandy's rules. His held spell was Evoke Lightning. Every combat encounter started with a flash of light and someone getting a shock. As the GM I didn't complain. It seemed to work and the costs were good enough that he didn't go around throwing bolts of lightning like a D&D mage. (Since the noniz deity list is so small (much like that of the hobniz), I'll eventually be combining both pantheons into a single work on my website...) CHARMALAINE Runes: Mind Charmalaine is the young hero-goddess of Keen Senses & Narrow Escapes. Cult in the World Originally born the daughter of one of Brandobaris' rare avatars, Charmalaine led a wild and reckless life across most of the known Flanaess and some of the unknown bits as well before ascending to the Upper Worlds. While the luck of her father played a large part in her success, it was her own dedication to the honing of her senses that drew her along the Path of Heroes. Charmalaine's followers do not observe a regular High Holy Day, rather whichever Priest maintains the local shrine sets his own schedule, designed to best fulfill the needs of his flock. Regular services are maintained every Godsday, in any event. Priests of Charmalaine typically don oiled black leather armor like their patroness, and wield light maces in combat. Whenever Charmalaine favors one of her initiates or priests with an Allied Spirit, it always takes the form of an awakened ferret. Lay Membership Requirements: Lay followers of Charmalaine are often wanderers, scouts, or adventurers. Skills taught by the cult include Dodge, Leap, Walk Tightrope, Speak Languages, Evaluate, Lores (hobniz, world), Juggle, Play Instrument, Listen, Scan, Scent/Taste, Ceremony, and 1H Mace attack. Initiate Membership Requirements: In addition to the standard requirements, prospective initiates of Charmalaine must awaken their psionic potential. Charmalaine's cult only teaches the skills related to the Clairaudience Aspect (which is counted as being only half it's total for the purposes of calculating total Aspect) and Gestalt. Spirit Magic: Befuddle, Comprehension, Ease Pain, Farsee, Mind Trap, and Second Sight. Priesthood Requirements: Standard. Priests of Charmalaine (known as Mentors) typically retire from their wandering lifestyles and 'settle down' to tend an available shrine. Though many still take long sabbaticals to visit friends or check out local problems, such leaves of absence never conflict with their schedule of holidays (though missing a few Godsdays is not uncommon). Virtues for this cult include Curious and Reckless. Common Divine Magic: Armoring Enchantment, Binding Enchantment, Call Followers, Dismiss Magic, Divination, Enchant Holy Symbol, Excommunication, Heal Wound, Initiate, Magic Point Matrix Enchantment, Mindlink, Sanctify, Soul Sight, Spell Matrix Enchantment, Spellteaching, Strengthening Enchantment, Warding, Worship Charmalaine. It's not linked from anywhere in my site (yet), so you'll >have to go there directly: >http://www.maranci.net/rqpast.htm Looks pretty solid to me, with a couple quibbles and possible clarifications: 1)"Unlike previous systems, characters in RuneQuest are not defined and limited by a "class" or profession. Instead, they have skills" This was also true of TRAVELLER, published a year before RQ (the 'careers' in TRAVELLER having the same function as the Previous Experience charts in RQ - figure out what skills your character has - but with all skills still available to any character, regardless of career-path). A significant difference, though, was RQ's universal and consistent percentage-based system, as opposed to TRAVELLER's ad hoc non-system. 2)"A new editor at Avalon Hill named Ken Rolston recruited writers from the fan base and published well-illustrated new Gloranthan material" Possibly worth mentioning that KR was previously both a vocal proponent of RQ during his days as game reviewer for DRAGON magazine (I know he turned me onto it), as well as a contributor/co-author of some later RQ2 products ('Pavis' and/or 'Big Rubble' IIRC). 3)"The majority of fans ended up in the first camp, and the Glorantha Digest mailing list became a hotbed of a new breed of Gloranthan "scholar". The list saw discussions of amazing obscurity, focusing on issues both minute and esoteric." This shift actually happened while the list was still called "the RuneQuest Digest/Daily," and presumably caused the subsequent name-change and list-split, which happened well before the 'official' divorce of RQ and Glorantha. 4)"Before RuneQuest Slayers could be published it was placed into limbo, however, by the takeover of Avalon Hill by Wizards of the Coast. ... The final nail in RuneQuest's coffin was the acquisition of WOTC by Hasbro." I believe you've got the order of events backwards here, and that AH was acquired directly by Hasbro before Hasbro also acquired WotC. Perhaps some mention could also be made of WotC's operational philosophy ("the theory of network externalities") that the marketplace can only support one rpg rules-system (that being D&D3/d20) as further evidence of why a Hasbro/WotC-published RQ4 will presumably never appear. If an elemental was released from a binding enchantment while the enchantment item moving rapidly, would the elemental have the enchantments speed after materialising or would it be left behind while the binding object went on? I tend to believe the first option although it raises lots of possibilities in my sadistic mind. An arrow with a gnome binded in it would be devastating weapon if the gnome was given the order to come out in mid-air. 10 m3 gnome coming at you like a meteor is not a healthy sight. If that was the case, how should the damage be calculated? Simple damage bonus seems way too little for this kind of case. Double or triple perhaps? Comments, ideas?
