I had a totally different take on this - I saw this as the sort of event that plagued the Vingkotlings in that Great Darkness. Good things turned bad - the world becomes unlivable.

In any case I assume this is going to be late in the siege.

Now that does suggest an interesting angle. For the most part the Heortings emphasise the masculine nature of Heler and "a being of dual gender ... makes them uneasy" (Storm Tribe p 76). They don't, in general, recognise Tarena, the Blue Woman, as an aspect of Heler (her worhip is uncommon and she is seen as a different deity by all except her followers - ST p83). This gives the lunars a good in - if they begin to emphasise and identify the feminine side of Heler and bring back the Urangu shape (ST p76) then they can divorce him/her from the Storm ribe and "marry" her into the lunar pantheon. Alternatively, by reintegrating the masculine and feminine parts of Heler they bring back the Urangu shape which is earlier aspect and thus probably still belongs to the period where Heler and Orlanth are mortal enemies. Who better to have on your side than the god who "helped overcome Orlanth in his three aquatic defeats"?

Alternatively they could have brought back Ui who turned Heler into solid crystal in the darkness. This would then give them free reign to pervert his clouds and rain. Heler was saved by Orlanth the last time out, but he has his own problems at the moment.
