There is an easy answer to this. Attacking the walls on the far side of the picture would be much wiser then attacking the gatehouse. But you have to be able to get your army ontop of the mesa that is assumed to continue off to the right of the picture.

The Lunars have magics or technology or both that allow them to get to the top of the mesa behind the fortress. Enter some cool quests and seven ramps and the army can storm the mesa behind the fortress and attack the weakest walls.
