I rahter liked someones earlier suggestion of massive oaken gates, carved with runes and painted in bright colours. I can picture the runes being linked together in patterns as in viking carving; would look very pretty indeed, and no doubt could be potent magically.

What if the gates are actually a gargoyle? They're not humanoid, they're gate-shaped. They're intelligent enough to know when to open and when to close.
