I don't think the seige closes down that much until Tatius gets there, maybe later. A large warband might have to fight their way through but a small party would be unlucky to be intercepted. And even if they were they could conduct a fighting retreat and have another go later.

I think that's Broyan, he needed some good solid troops while he got the clans together. They could also train the warbands as they arrived - get them to operate more as units rather than individual heros. Of course how much of the latter happened is an interesting question. It also explains why they leave, they were only contracted to stay a season or two probably for cost reasons.
