Bat-detection range

True. Maybe the problem isn't detecting that the Bat's *there*, it's figuring out where it's going next. Even if it's travelling in a dead straight line, right at you, it might stop short, or fly past. And of course it probably stops on the way for snack breaks.

So you'd have people doing the SoE. Just afterwards, someone spots a bright red flappy thing leaving the Moon. Oh no, it can't be...? We didn't do that, did we?

And it lands. Somewhere. Oh, good, it isn't coming for us. It takes off again, moves some more. Is it, isn't it...?

At some point the Lunars send a messenger to say, you see that large red object in the sky? Yes, it is aimed here. Here are the terms for surrender. And *then* the defenders can start some serious planning.
