My memory is that the peat bogs of Ireland are relatively recent -
they grew after the primary forest was cut down - and the
requirements are
1 - poor drainage / shallow stagnant water and
2 - slightly acidic soil (no limestone - there may be limestone in
the Tor, it is a precursor to Marble I think) so the mosses and
other biomass that makes up peat can grow
