I know the first time I tried to figure out how they "worked", I was using RQ Sorcery rules for the purpose. They've been known about for a long time, and aren't they fun? (Well, unless you have that "misapplied worship" nonsense making them unplayable, but let's pass over that.) There's a nice easy (and therefore only vaguely applicable) parallel to the whole setup: Normans/Westerners attempting to lord it over a Saxon/Orlanthi population.
