and, very late: apologies for not following this one up, but it turns out that even virtual walking those mountains is a bit much for me at the moment, due to the problems of using a laptop while lying down. I'm now on a tiny little thing that can do email and doesn't hurt (much), but can't come close to doing Google Maps. I have, however, implanted the idea of that as an area for next year's holiday in Dave's mind. Easy enough - we're both getting Alp-withdrawal.

Places like Seefeld were productive farming villages long before they became ski resorts. Garmisch-Partenkirchen were ancient and wealthy market villages - fwiw Partenkirchen is older than London. All are right up at the edge of the mountains and surrounded by mountains. FWIW, the valley of Garmisch-Partenkirchen makes a great source of inspiration for the Kheldon vale. The valley of the Stubaital makes a great inspiration for Boldhome (and is complete with a half-dozen old farming villages).

Cattle replaced sheep after the Black Death which hit the Alpine communities extremely hard. Prior to that, there would have been large flocks of sheep throughout the alpine valleys.
