I am definitely glad you accepted the invite!

Based on a mix of several of your ideas, I am now pondering this solution:

In 1626 ST, while the Lunar Empire is sliding into disorder following the disappearance of Moonson, a joint invasion of "the Lunar Empire" begins. The invaders are the unlikely paring of King Oddi the Keen's Bilini tribesmen from Talastar and Ralzakark's Dorastan chaos horde. The combined horde slowly makes its way north through Anadikki leaving a vast swath of destruction in its wake. The Imperial response is tepid - the heartlands have their own problems. The Carmanians are divided, and it takes them way too long to put a united force together. Still, they do manage to at stop the horde's northern march at a bloody battle in Durnvok. The horde then turns west, and slaughters its way to the Esel River where they run headlong into the Syndic's Ban.

The long decaying Ban shudders under the horde's magical assault and then falls . What is revealed is a vast land empty of sentient beings. The land is littered with evidence of lost civilizations. One was apparently founded by Carmanians. Others were Orlanthi, Tawari, or Kereusi. All are abandoned. The empty land is a prize that nobody can afford to loose. Imperial Loskalm makes a play for it, maybe Jonatela (if they have resisted Loskalm), and definitely the Carmanians. The first on the scene, though, is Ralzakark and Oddi the Keen.

Now for the mysterious part: Although it isn't immediately obvious, some places were abandoned before others. Each culture developed in its own isolated pocket of the Ban. Something happened to one of them, and all the people went missing. Then the Ban opened the area up to neighboring regions and their denizens went missing too, and so on in a domino fashion. What caused this? Is it still here? Is it still a threat? Is it going to affect the rest of the world now that the Ban is fully down? The mystery will unfold in the game.

Any other ideas?
