To Father Verri Qurious
Temple of Buserian in Yardesh

Dear father,

I apologise for the long time since my last missive, but my researches led me into Heortling lands and it was difficult to locate places from whence I could send mail. I have lately come to Pavis and have completed my research into Second age magics.

Father, we were correct! There was definitely a change in magic after the fall of Jrusteli.

Records in Sun County and Pavis agree with Heortling histories and, ultimately, with Imperial records. Before the fall, there are many tales of Runes as physical objects. I would not believe this, if I had not compared such a wide range of sources, but everything I have read supports the position that higher magics consisted of finding a PHYSICAL rune and, through some sort of ceremony, attuning oneself to the power contained therein.

After the fall, it appears as if these objects became powerless and that such powers became the sole province of the gods and their worshippers.

For example, from a Lankor Mhy temple in Dragon Pass:

"The crops are failing, our people call upon their rune magics for rain but the magics fail. Our runes have become nothing, mere sticks and pebbles where once they were things of power."

>From the same temple, written at a later date:

"Praise Orlanth! The priests called upon Him in their distress and He reached down to them and gave them the power to call upon Heler."

There are similar stories wherever I looked. I managed to talk a while with a troll in Pavis, from the Argan Argar cult, and he confirmed that even the trolls tell such stories.

Father, I am glad that I am able to confirm your ideas. I wish I could tell you more but I cannot.

My researches led me further into exploration of this matter than would have been wise. I have learned much and deduced more about the Jrusteli abominators and I dare not tell anyone, least of all my beloved father, anything that might allow them to follow me. I will not see you again for I know that one comes for me with a Gift.

Tell mother I am sorry,

your loving son, Ovvelli Qurious

Part of this is also my thoughts on the fabled God Learner Secret(TM). What if there was no secret? What if the secret was merely an attempt by other cultures to understand what the GLs did? What if he whole thing was just an inability in others to conceive of doing what the GLs did, ie just charging into the God plane with no respect and trampling the beliefs of others. ?
Of course, if you have players of an inquisitive bent who are looking for The Secret, they'll never find it, but they could learn enough to attract the attention of Others. Nice idea for a CoC style Hound of Tindalos kinda thing.

But this just MY idea.
