I'm pretty sure I've read at least one account where this is what happens:

Harsaltar and the household are defending the Temple of Sartar from the lunars.

Ignifir engages Harsaltar.

Harsaltar gives Ignifir a mortal wound, but the emperor manages to push past Harsaltar before falling.

Harsaltar turns to finish off the emperor, thereby turning his back on the rest of the foe.

That breaks a geas and either Humakt strikes him down or his god abandons him, leaving him without magic and the the lunars are then able to cut him down.
