I agree. Maybe this is the solution in Enkloso. There's a good popular description of the technique in Charles Mann's _1491_, which I think I've referenced on this list before.

Frankly, I like the idea that Aldryami societies might vary at least as much as human ones, and that their social organization and lifecycles might incorporate some biological elements like serotiny. It just seems a shame to make them twisty little woodmen, all alike.
