They could quite easily have deferred their reproductive capacity, just like male termite workers. The female may also have mated previously and need the food to make the eggs (e.g. leafcutter ant queens can store sperm from their nuptual flight for ca. 20 years). The males ould also quite easily be females by male in appearance, like some mites are genetically male but phenotypically female.

If there are shelves needing putting up, or scapegoats required, Nature has an infinity of solutions.
