The answer is "it depends". It depends on what sort of power the theist is trying to use, how he or she is trying to use it and quite possibly other circumstances (if you have a myth for the feat that might have some bearing, for instance). Storm being a violent, and hard-to-control power (with fratricidal tendencies, too !) I'd say that a spectacular failure with a windblast would tend to backfire. There would be a windblast - but it would probably harm the user, directly or indirectly.
