I don't think it stops the game - I think it takes the game in a different direction - isn't that the point of rolling dice?
And, I would see this as whiff/fizzle. Losing the major source of magic is going to be a big big thing for a PC. More spectacular than falling off a cliff and breaking your leg. Like losing a loved one, losing a job, only less gruesome to play.

I'd make it the default. A priest starts reading the funeral service out at a wedding - he's going to find it difficult starting the next wedding.
If you want fireworks, though, you just have a whirlwind go out of control, an Umbroli attack the hero. Just, wind goes wrong.
