It's not the split that ever bothered me. It was the implication that given religions were ONLY 1 or the other. Or almost exclusively such. So concentration really seemed the natural default - and was necessary to being a "good magic user" it seemed - with Devotee and Shaman requiring it.
I think Greg has made it clear more than once that the idea of the three worlds is important in some way - I just think the presentation could have been better and that the concentration rules as written incentivise concentration a bit too much.
