In Caladraland, coal is FIREBONE, which along with EARTHBLOOD (oil) is 'the fused and blackened remnants of the Green Age'. In God Learner mythology, the twin theomancers Moray and Telerio learned of both when they quested for the powers of Flamal (they got around a bit). Elves consider its use the desecration of their dead.

God Learners aside, there's a fair bit in Caladraland, as a function of Veskarthan's somewhat violent descent into the earth, and early reign.
