I've seen (well, indirectly) the sad results of this. I gave a copy of ElfQuest (the Chaosium game) to an ElfQuest fan who had some experience with RPGs. She figured she had to play with all the optional rules, and they were too complex for her or her group, and they ended up not playing after a game or two.

I'd rather err on the side of growing the market.
