IMO Griffin Mountain is the best supplement ever (though perhaps that's partly because of all the detailed RQ stats I didn't have to make up, back in the 1980s). Like almost all the great Chaosium supplements, it's now available in a lavishly illustrated reprint from Moon Design.

I find HeroQuest a lot easier to GM than RQ, and more flexible. If you're willing to make up the few necessary stats on the fly, you can easily use HQ with Griffin Mountain (Jeff did this in the Orlmarth campaign). Or you can use HQ with the Pavis & Big Rubble and Borderlands reprints (Jeff ran a HQ game based on these).

Choice of rules is a matter of style, but you can't go wrong with the Moon Design reprints.

On the other hand, they don't really cover the Sartarites very well. For that, Thunder Rebels and Barbarian Adventures are the ticket.
